Concurrent Controls was founded in 1987 by Dawn DeBruyn and Douglas Goodall with the vision of providing a robust, high-performance operating system designed specifically for use in turnkey systems in the POS, healthcare and hospitality markets. Since most turnkey systems were installed directly by software developers or through VARs(value added resellers), CCI products were tailored to their needs.
The early product specifications included all the capabilities included in the then-current Unix (Xenix), combined with the easy-to-use DOS interface, and a comprehensive set of remote support and diagnostic programs. CCI Concurrent DOS powered from two to more than one hundred desktops in key installations around the country, ranging from Borders Bookstores and Rite Aid Drugstores, to motels, restaurants, racetracks, and down to thousands of smaller installations in medical, dental and chiropractic offices. The process control market was not an initial target, but quickly became substantial with the addition of such clients as Baxter Healthcare (later Dade Behring ), Gammametrics and Roche Laboratories.
In the late 90's, the company developed unique, Windows-based technology to enable a single Windows PC to drive more than one desktop or user screen, even a televison. The Applica technology became part of a spin-off dedicated to providing low-cost desktops for the home and schools .
More recently, the company has focused its efforts on moving into a new Internet-related venue, VARCentral, taking advantage of the experience built over many years of working with VARs on hundreds of thousands of turnkey systems. VARCentral will focus on material near and dear to VARs, and provide a forum for VARs to exchange information, locate "VAR-friendly" hardware and software programs, buy and sell components, and promote their companies.
